Community-School Parks: May 2009

Unanimous City Council Vote for CSPs

The L.A. City Council unanimously approved an initiative promoted by People for Parks to make public school campuses greener and open them on weekends to the neighboring communities. The Community-School Parks (CSP) plan calls for a master joint-use agreement between the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks and the L.A. Unified School District, and would be funded through public and private sources.

“With this initiative, we’re taking a giant leap toward making Los Angeles a healthier city where children of all ages can play and enjoy active recreation in their own neighborhoods,” said Tom LaBonge, the plan’s most enthusiastic advocate on the Council.

Speaking for the CSP plan before the Council were People for Parks Vice President John Perez, Ana Lasso of LAUSD, Tim Bower of Beyond the Bell, and Joel Alvarez of the city’s Recreation and Parks Department. Also speaking at the Council were 28th Street Elementary parent Martha Sanchez and a delegation from Calvert Elementary in the Valley.

The CSP program is expected to start with 15 pilot sites throughout the city, beginning with Trinity Street Elementary.
