Korean Media Focuses on Parks Awards

On Oct. 7, reporters for Los Angeles' Korean-speaking newspapers, radio stations and TV news programs attended a press conference to announce that People for Parks has named the Korean American Coalition – Los Angeles (KACLA) its Organization of the Year for 2008.

KACLA Executive Director Grace Yoo described how Community-School Parks (CSPs) would improve life in park-poor Koreatown, one of L.A.'s fastest growing and most dynamic communities. “This is what People for Parks can do, and we think it's wonderful,” Yoo said.

PFP President Jack Foley said CSPs would also mean more after-school and weekend programs at local schools. “We will continue to push for LAUSD to create more CSPs in Koreatown.”

When asked why PFP chose KACLA to honor, Executive Director Jim Stewart recounted how coalition leaders had forcefully argued for CSPs at public hearings during the past 12 months. “KACLA was very influential in convincing the City Council and School Board to endorse the program.”
