Oct. 14 Honors for Joe Edmiston, Kevin de León, the Korean-American Coalition, Park Heroes
KNBC's Fritz Coleman to emcee ceremony at L.A. River Center
Awards Season begins this year on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 , when People for Parks returns to the beautiful L.A. River Center for our seventh annual Parks Awards Celebration dinner from 4:30 – 7:30 pm.
Honorees include Joe Edmiston for his leadership of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy for 28 years. The Conservancy has helped to preserve over 60,000 acres of wilderness and urban parkland, and improved more than 110 public recreational facilities throughout Southern California.
Legislator of the Year is Assistant Assembly Majority Leader Kevin de León , who spearheaded the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Act of 2008. Assemblyman De León's AB31 will prioritize $400 million from Prop. 84 to address parks and recreation needs of critically underserved communities.
The community group to be honored is the Korean American Coalition – Los Angeles for its tenacious advocacy for improved parks and recreation opportunities, and its strong support for the PFP Community-School Parks program .
In addition, employees and volunteers from parks and recreation departments throughout L.A. County will be honored as Park Heroes and Teen Heroes to recognize their exceptional service to the community.
