Picking Heroes
Traci Goldberg and Roy Williams are looking for the next crop of Parks Heroes. Like judges on American Idol, Goldberg and Williams are poring over scores of nominations describing acts of exceptional community pride, public service and environmental consciousness.
“I hope these folks get some of the recognition they're due,” said Williams, Regional Operations Manager for the L.A. County Dept. of Parks and Recreation.
People for Parks and the L.A. City and County parks and rec agencies have sponsored the awards since 2002 to honor exemplary service by employees, volunteers, retirees and teens. Nominations fall into four adult categories: supervisory, fulltime frontline, part-time and volunteer. All nominees under 18 are eligible to be a Teen Hero.
Where's the line between doing a good job and being a hero? “For me, it's whoever goes ‘above and beyond' in the way they provide services and conduct their life,” said Goldberg, a Senior Rec Director with the City of L.A. “For example, just participating in community service isn't enough for a teen to win. They need to inspire and mentor other kids in math or another subject to excel.”
The deadline is Monday, Sept. 8 to nominate employees and volunteers at any of the hundreds of facilities across L.A. County and its 88 cities, from wildlife sanctuaries and nature centers to beaches, lakes and parks. Winners receive a jacket, certificate and invitations to the Oct. 14 Parks Awards ceremony.
