Exciting Updates on Our Community School Parks

20th St Elementary School

People for Parks’ 20th St Community School Park has a brand new playground apparatus! This bright blue stunner was installed by the LA Rams, who tell us that one of the reasons they selected 20th St was because the space is accessible to the community on weekends. This is something that we make possible through our service agreement with LAUSD. Best of all: the whole community participated in its installation! LA Rams employees and football players, as well as PFP, school staff and, of course, moms, dads and kids spent a summer afternoon building their beautiful new playground. It’s incredibly rewarding to see CSP visitors of all ages enjoying this new addition on Saturdays. It’s the power of play in action.

24th St Elementary School

In July, we added two new CSP coaches to our 24th St Community School Park! Magaly Gomez and Sofia Rodriguez are longtime afterschool enrichment specialists with Beyond the Bell and their experience working with kids really shines through. In addition to offering sports and fitness-oriented activities to the site’s 150 monthly visitors, Sofia and Magaly lead unique Arts & Crafts activities, such as rain-stick and flower pot making. Sofia and Magaly also bring a love for the CSP philosophy, which involves more community engagement and intergenerational play than required in standard afterschool programming. “Seeing how happy kids are to share in activities with their parents is really rewarding. It’s not something we get to see during the week, and it’s what makes CSPs so special.” The feeling is clearly mutual: the parents and kids love seeing Sofia and Magaly every Saturday. As one dad says, “They’re like family.”

Stay tuned for more updates on our CSPs!
